During Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary special on Sunday, actor Tom Hanks reprised his role as Doug, a character first introduced in a 2016 Black Jeopardy! sketch. This time, Doug returned as a MAGA-hat-wearing Trump supporter, sparking both laughter and controversy.

The sketch, hosted by Kenan Thompson as Darnell, featured a star-studded lineup including Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, and Eddie Murphy, who delivered a spot-on impression of Morgan. Hanks’ character, Doug, initially found common ground with the other contestants but quickly revealed his divisive views. At one point, Doug suggested creating a “White Jeopardy!” and invited Darnell to join, to which Thompson’s character firmly replied, “We don’t need it.”

The skit took a sharp turn when Doug appeared visibly uncomfortable shaking a Black contestant’s hand, highlighting the character’s underlying prejudices. Clips of the segment circulated online, drawing mixed reactions. While some viewers praised the satire, others criticized it for perpetuating stereotypes about Trump supporters.

Hanks’ portrayal of Doug first gained attention in 2016, when the character’s MAGA affiliation led to awkward but humorous moments on Black Jeopardy!. This latest iteration delved deeper into the character’s flaws, using humor to critique political and social divides.

Off-screen, Hanks has been vocal about his concerns regarding a potential Trump presidency. In a recent interview with CNN, he acknowledged short-term worries but expressed optimism about the long-term resilience of American democracy. “Our Constitution says, ‘We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union.’ That journey has missteps, but we keep moving forward,” he said.
