Southwest Airlines Grounded in Vegas Over Coronavirus

A scare was placed on passengers of Southwest Airlines when everyone on board was given masks to wear when a passenger was taken off the plane with flu-like symptoms.  The new coronavirus which comes from China is the hot topic of the latest epidemic outbreak.

The Southwest Airliner jet was grounded in Las Vegas, Nevada, upon finding out the ill passenger was in Beijing recently.  Cities in China have been quarantined, and only 5 cases have been found tested positive for the coronavirus in America so far.

The Airline told Fox News, the decision was made “out an abundance of caution,” and it was also “made in light of recent concerns for the coronavirus.”  When the plane landed in Las Vegas, a team of medical officers escorted the ill patient to the nearest medical facility to get evaluated.  After the medical evaluation, the patient was tested negative for the virus and was released.

A spokesman for Southwest Airlines released this statement to Fox News, “Local medical personnel met Flight 2889 once it arrived at the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport from Las Vegas on Saturday due to reports of an ill customer. Out of an abundance of caution, and in light of the recent concerns of the coronavirus, our crew followed recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control for responding to concerns to ensure the customer, and those traveling with them, receive the assistance or support they may need.”

There was a report on Fox News explaining that 14 different airports in the U.S. have posters from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which explains in English and Chinese what symptoms to look for.  This is a serious issue as there is no cure for the coronavirus.

The virus originated in Wuhan, China, and the entire city is quarantined.  There was a “health alert” issued to all travelers coming from China.  They must seek immediate medical help if they have any cough, trouble breathing, accompanied by fever.

The coronavirus can be compared to those who have pneumonia.  It also can be like flu virus symptoms.  There are no vaccines to prevent or cure the coronavirus, and the only treatment which can be practiced is plenty of rest, taking fever or pain medicine, and drinking plenty of fluids.  It would have to run its course.

Since December of last year, there have been close to 600 confirmed cases and 17 deaths linked to the illness.  So far, five countries have had confirmed cases.  The first case for the U.S. was confirmed in Seattle, Washington. The second case was found in Chicago, Illinois.  Recent cases were found in California and Arizona.

Dr. Debra Chew, a former epidemic intelligence officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told Fox News, “Currently, a lot is unknown about the Wuhan coronavirus, but the CDC and the World Health Organization are actively investigating to learn more about this virus, the way it spreads and its severity of illness.”

Passengers onboard Southwest Airlines were lucky that the illness from the passenger was the coronavirus.  Scientists and doctors are warning the world; this is an airborne and highly contagious illness.

The masks which were given out to the passengers would help contain the virus from spreading, but it would not have helped them if it were confirmed to be the virus.  Those on the plane would have already been infected or would have been carrying the virus.

In these situations, everyone needs to be considerate of the people around them.  No one wants or needs to be sick, especially with this scary virus.  Those who are sick should stay home and wash their hands often.

Those who are not sick should also wash their hands often.  It is not an easy thing to walk around with a mask on all day, but we don’t want to end up like the people in China who have to live like this.  Everyone has a busy life and does not want to stop living their lives.

If consideration is a critical factor with everyone, then the virus can be contained, and the epidemic can be resolved.  People who are sick can shut airlines, businesses, cities, and more when they travel sick.  Everyone is on edge, and the scare spreads like the illness.

Thank God the passenger tested negative, but if they tested positive, we would have a worse situation on a larger scale.  Everyone needs to be considerate and cautious at the same time.
